Write a Compelling Artist Statement for Portfolio

My work exists at the crossroads of memory and displacement, where personal narrative intersects with collective experience. Through oil painting and mixed media collage, I explore themes of identity, migration, and the intersection of memory and place, creating visual stories that speak to the universal human experience of belonging. Drawing from my own family's immigration journey and inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo, contemporary immigration stories, and Eastern European folk art, I employ a contemporary realist approach infused with surrealist elements. My process involves layering traditional painting techniques with found materials and personal photographs, creating textured surfaces that mirror the complexity of cultural identity. Each piece begins with a foundation of oil paint, building atmospheric backgrounds that suggest both specific locations and emotional states. I then introduce collage elements—fragments of letters, vintage photographs, and cultural artifacts—that serve as touchstones to memory and heritage. This layering technique reflects how identity itself is constructed: through accumulated experiences, inherited traditions, and adaptive responses to new environments. My work challenges viewers to consider their own relationships to place and belonging. In an increasingly globalized world, these paintings offer a meditation on what we carry with us, what we leave behind, and how we construct home in unfamiliar territories. After eight years of developing this practice, I remain committed to creating art that bridges personal experience with broader social narratives, inviting dialogue about our shared humanity while celebrating the richness of cultural diversity.
